Basis Trade Between Spot ETFs and CME Futures Returns

The classic basis trade between US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs and CME-listed Bitcoin futures has re-emerged as an attractive institutional strategy, following a period in which annualised spreads had compressed sharply. Prime brokers and desks including Hidden Road and FalconX have highlighted increased client interest.

The trade involves buying the spot ETF and shorting a corresponding CME futures contract, aiming to capture the term premium as the futures roll toward spot. Execution requires access to both an approved participant channel and CME clearing arrangements.

Hedge fund allocators have historically been the largest users of the trade.
